The government doesn't use the railroad that much. If government officials are going somewhere they'll take a plane, but when they're shipping things from D.C. that are to big for trucks, they will put it on a railroad. If it's going west, it will most likely be put on the Transcontinental Railroad. For instance, if they were shipping something huge like a rocket or a bomb from the east to the west they would have to put it on a train which would be traveling on the Transcontinental Railroad. Back in the 1940s in World War II America was fighting a two front battle, so they would have to send military supplies and equipment on the Transcontinental Railroad to get to the West to send off to fight Japan.
